3rd Higher Education & Research Conference

Portorož, 23-25 September. In the organization of the Euro-Mediterranean University EMUNI the 3rd EMUNI Conference on Higher Education and Research with a title »Entrepreneurial learning and the role of universities« was held in Portorož.The focal part of the conference that was held on Friday, was opened by Dr. Joseph Mifsud, EMUNI president. He first expressed welcome to the participants, among them representatives of diplomacy, education institutions, local community and economy. EMUNI president stressed the main tasks for the current operation of universities, among them the need to do more for less, because the world economic crisis is also reflected in the higher-education area. At the same time, there is still a gap between the needs of the employability and labour market and profiles of young diplomats. The president also stressed the co-operation of EMUNI with the institutions of Moroccan universities, among them the University Ben Abdellah from Fez, the representative of which Dr. Esserhini Farissi, was also among the speakers of the opening part. A special guest of the first day of the conference was Prof. Dr. Saleh Hashem, Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities which operates in the frame of the Arab League and aims at creating co-operation among the universities of the Arabic world, while encompassing 230 member universities and 7.2 million students. He highlighted the main challenges of the universities throughout the world, among them population growth and consequently the needs of quality assurance, dialogue among cultures and fund raising. Apart of him the guest speakers were Dr. Gregor Veselko, President of the Management Board of the Port of Koper, which is one of the most important supporters of EMUNI, Eva Jimeno Sicilia, European Training Foundation (ETF), which co-operates with EMUNI on an Entrepreneurial project and others EMUNI. 

At the nine paper sessions that were held paralelly after the common opening part, more than 50 papers were presented, including topics such as: Lifelong learning, innovative pedagogy, co-operation between entrepreneurship and universities, qualiy, recognition and employability. The conference gathered participants from various countries of the Euro-Mediterranean region, including Slovenia, Egypt, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, BiH.

On Saturday the European day of languages was celebrated with the final panel in the frame of the conference in co-operation with the DG for Translation of the European Commission. The guests of the panel were Cristian Buchiu (DG for Translation of the European), Abdel Bari Atwan (editor of the Al-Quds Al-Arabi Magazine and one of the 50 most influential Arabic people according to the Middle East Magazine and Prof. Dr. Cosimo Notarstefano (Polo Euromediterraneo Jean Monnet, Bari). More than 300 viewers were watching the EU day of languages celebration that was broadcasted via internet.
